    Validation of the perceived stress scale (Pss-10) in medical and health sciences students in Hong Kong

    INTRODUCTION: The demanding nature of medical and health sciences studies can cause stress among students in these disciplines affecting their wellbeing and academic performance. The Perceived Stress Scale (PSS-10) is a widely used measure of perceived stress among medical students and healthcare professionals that has not yet been validated among medical and health sciences students in Hong Kong. The aim of this study is to establish the construct validity and reliability of the PSS-10 in this context. METHODS: 267 final year medical and health sciences students were surveyed using the PSS-10. The data were analysed using exploratory factor analysis for construct validity and Cronbach’s alpha coefficient and corrected item-total correlations for reliability. RESULTS: Exploratory factor analysis revealed a two-factor structure for PSS-10, with Cronbach’s alpha of 0.865 and 0.796, indicating good internal consistency. Corrected item-total correlations showed satisfactory correlation ranged from 0.539 to 0.748 for all items and their respective subscale. Both tests supported PSS-10 as a two-factor scale. CONCLUSIONS: The PSS-10 is a valid measure for assessing perceived stress in Hong Kong medical and health sciences students

    Teaching about teaching and instruction on instruction: A challenge for health sciences library education

    Objective: This is a review of the master's-level curricula of the fifty-eight America Library Association-accredited library and information science programs and iSchools for evidence of coursework and content related to library instruction. Special emphasis is placed on the schools and programs that also offer coursework in medical or health sciences librarianship. Methods: Fifty-eight school and program websites were reviewed. Course titles and course descriptions for seventy-three separate classes were analyzed. Twenty-three syllabi were examined. Results: All North American library education programs offer at least one course in the general area of library instruction; some programs offer multiple courses. No courses on instruction, however, are focused directly on the specialized area of health sciences librarianship. Conclusions: Master's degree students can take appropriate classes on library instruction, but the medical library profession needs to offer continuing education opportunities for practitioners who want to have specific instruction for the specialized world of the health sciences

    Stress among medical students of Gorgan (South East of Caspian Sea), Iran

    Objective: This study aims to estimate the prevalence of psychological stress and association between the levels of stress and study variables among Gorgan medical students. Materials and methods: All three year medical students (129 basic sciences students) in Gorgan Faculty of Medicine, Golestan University of medical Sciences, were asked to complete the Kessler 10 questionnaire. Results: The findings showed mild, moderate and severe stress among 26.22%, 20.50% and 14.75% study subjects. 39.35% of medical students had no stress. There was statistically significant association between year of study and stress levels (p= 0.040). Conclusion: The results indicate that there is a decrease in the psychological health of first year medical students. Provided that stress management courses are organised by medical schools, when the students arrive, they will cope up with the stress in coming years. These courses may reduce the negative effects of stress on medical students. By providing such courses and reducing stress level, medical students may improve their medical education

    Methyl mercury concentrations in seafood collected from Zhoushan Islands, Zhejiang, China, and their potential health risk for the fishing community

    Seafood is an important exposure route for mercury, especially methyl mercury (MeHg). Therefore, we quantified MeHg concentrations in 69 species of seafood including fish, crustaceans and mollusks collected from Zhoushan Islands, China. MeHg concentrations ranged from 1. The daily dietary intake and hazard quotient for MeHg were calculated to estimate exposure and health risk through seafood consumption by local inhabitants. The calculated HQ was lower than 1, thus indicating that the exposure was below the risk threshold of related chronic diseases.     Association of screen time and physical activity with health-related quality of life in Iranian children and adolescents 11 Medical and Health Sciences 1117 Public Health and Health Services

    Background: Health-related quality of life (HRQoL) is a multidimensional concept with significant effects and children and adolescence; while physical activity (PA) and screen time (ST) have been suggested as its probable predictors. Present study aims to investigate the association of PA, ST and their combination, with HRQoL in a nationally-representative sample of Iranian children and adolescents. Methods: As for the estimated sample size, 25,000 students aged 6-18 years were selected via multi-stage cluster sampling from 30 provinces of Iran. Sociodemographic data was obtained by using the questionnaire of the World Health Organization-Global school based student health survey (GSHS). Persian Pediatric Quality of Life inventory (PedsQL) and Physical Activity Questionnaire for the pediatric age group (PAQ-A) were applied for evaluating HRQoL and PA, respectively. PA scores 1-1.9 and 2-5 were respectively considered as low and high PA. The average duration of time spent on watching TV and leisure time computer use were considered as ST behaviors. ST of less than 2 h was considered low. Results: Out of 25,000 invited individuals, 23,043 students (mean age: 12.5) completed the study (response rate: 92.17). In linear regression models, ST duration had significant inverse association with total QoL (β:-0.49, p < 0.05). PA showed positive significant associations with HRQoL total score (β: 1.8, p < 0.05). Joint association of PA and ST revealed the strongest association of "high PA-low ST" category with total HRQoL (β: 2.2, p < 0.05); while "high PA-high ST" showed better total HRQoL score (β: 1.3) compared to "low PA-low ST" subgroup. Conclusion: Both PA and ST are significantly and independently associated with HRQoL in Iranian children and adolescents; while the adverse effect of prolonged ST could be diminished by a high PA. © 2019 The Author(s)

    The Health Sciences Librarian in Medical Education: A Vital Pathways Task Force

    Objectives: The Medical Education Task Force of the Task Force on Vital Pathways for Hospital Librarians reviewed current and future roles of health sciences librarians in medical education at the graduate and undergraduate levels and worked with national organizations to integrate library services, education, and staff into the requirements for training medical students and residents. Methods: Standards for medical education accreditation programs were studied, and a literature search was conducted on the topic of the role of the health sciences librarian in medical education. Results: Expectations for library and information services in current standards were documented, and a draft standard prepared. A comprehensive bibliography on the role of the health sciences librarian in medical education was completed, and an analysis of the services provided by health sciences librarians was created. Conclusion: An essential role and responsibility of the health sciences librarian will be to provide the health care professional with the skills needed to access, manage, and use library and information resources effectively. Validation and recognition of the health sciences librarian’s contributions to medical education by accrediting agencies will be critical. The opportunity lies in health sciences librarians embracing the diverse roles that can be served in this vital activity, regardless of accrediting agency mandates
